Mechanism of Action
As a typical insect growth regulator, diflubenzuron inhibits chitin synthase activity, hindering the formation of the exoskeleton (chitin) during molting in larvae. This prevents normal larval development, leading to body wall rupture and death. While it has no direct killing effect on adult insects, it can significantly reduce adult egg laying and egg hatching rates, thereby suppressing insect population growth.
Targets and Applicable Crops
Main Targets:
It is particularly effective against Lepidoptera pests, such as Pieris rapae, Plutella xylostella, Cotton bollworm, Spodoptera litura, Spodoptera litura, Citrus leafminer, Codling moth, and Pine caterpillars. It also controls some Coleoptera pests (such as leaf beetles) and Diptera pests (such as mosquitoes and flies).
Applicable Crops:
It is widely used in vegetables (such as cabbage, Chinese cabbage, tomatoes, and peppers), cotton, fruit trees (such as citrus, apples, and pears), tea, forestry (such as pine and poplar trees), and flowers.
Toxicity and Safety
Mammalian Toxicity:
Low toxicity to humans and animals. The acute oral LD₅₀ in rats is >4640 mg/kg, and the dermal LD₅₀ is >10,000 mg/kg. It is non-teratogenic, carcinogenic, or mutagenic, and has no significant irritation to the skin or eyes.
Ecotoxicity:
Highly toxic to fish (such as carp and rainbow trout) (LC₅₀ 0.001-0.1 mg/L), so water contamination should be avoided.
Highly toxic to bees and silkworms. Application should be avoided during flowering and in mulberry fields.
Safe for natural enemies (such as parasitic wasps and predatory mites), contributing to ecological balance.
Usage
Formulations: Common formulations include 25% suspension concentrate, 5% emulsifiable concentrate, and 10% wettable powder.
Application Period: The optimal application period is during the young larval stage of pests (when they have low resistance and molt frequently), as this is when the effect is greatest. Application Method: Mainly spray. Apply evenly to both sides of crop leaves, tender shoots, and areas where pests are active, ensuring contact with the insects.
Long-lasting effect: Approximately 7-15 days. Repeat application every 10 days or so depending on pest infestation.
Precautions
1.Do not mix with alkaline pesticides (such as Bordeaux mixture or lime sulfur) to prevent decomposition and ineffectiveness.
2.It is recommended to rotate with insecticides with different mechanisms of action, such as organophosphates and pyrethroids, to delay the development of resistance.
3.Wear gloves and a mask when applying pesticides to avoid contact with skin or ingestion. Wash immediately after application.
4.Properly dispose of any remaining pesticide solution and packaging. Do not dump it into water sources or farmland to prevent environmental contamination.
5.Do not use in aquaculture areas, mulberry orchards, or near flowering nectar-producing plants.
